Frequently Asked Questions

How do I regenerate my Hayward DE Filter when bumping doesn’t lower the pressure?

Follow these steps if bumping your Hayward DE Filter isn’t helping:

1. Turn off the pump.

2. Bump the filter – Push down slowly and pull up swiftly, about seven (7) times.

3. Drain the filter – Open the lower gate valve and the top air valve; let it gravity drain.

4. Flush the filter – Turn the pump on, close the air valve, wait 30 seconds, then close the gate valve.

5. Recirculate – Run the pump to remove air from the system.

6. Repeat steps 1–5 for a thorough clean.

7. Add the proper amount of DE:

    • EC 75: 7 orange cups

    • EC 65: 6 orange cups

    • EC 40: 4 orange cups

What is total alkalinity?

Total alkalinity stabilizes pH levels. Low alkalinity leads to pH “bounce,” while high alkalinity makes pH harder to adjust. Keep this level balanced to maintain consistent water chemistry.

What is the purpose of my pool's filtration system?

The filtration system keeps your pool water clean and clear by removing debris and contaminants. Nejame & Sons pools come with top-quality systems for optimal performance.

What are pool outlets and why are they important?

Pool outlets allow water to leave the pool and circulate through the filtration system.

  • Surface skimmer: Removes debris floating on the surface.

  • Equalizer line: Maintains flow if the skimmer is obstructed.

What do the pool inlets do?

Inlets return filtered, heated, and treated water back into the pool. They also create the strong water jets you feel when holding the pool wall.

Why is water chemistry important?

Proper chemical treatment ensures clean, safe, and bacteria-free water. Pool disinfectants like chlorine disinfect and oxidize:

  • Disinfection: Destroys bacteria, algae, and viruses.

  • Oxidation: Breaks down organic debris to support filtration.

How can I tell if my pool needs more chlorine?

If your water appears dull or cloudy despite good filtration, it may lack proper chemical oxidation—especially after heavy use. Increase chlorine levels as needed.

What causes green pool water?

Algae is the likely cause of the green water. Stop by NeJame & Sons to have your water tested so we can help identify the issue and recommend the right treatment to get your pool back in shape. Regular maintenance and testing are key to preventing algae buildup.

Why is my spa or pool water foamy?

Excessive foaming is more common in spas and may result from:

  • Soft water (low calcium hardness)

  • Algaecides

  • High levels of dissolved solids from lotions, shampoos, etc.

Why is pH balance so important in pool water?

pH affects swimmer comfort and equipment longevity:

  • Ideal pH: 7.4 to 7.6

  • Low pH = acidic (can damage surfaces and irritate skin)

  • High pH = basic (can cause scaling and reduce sanitizer effectiveness)

What is calcium hardness?

This refers to the mineral (mainly calcium and magnesium) content of your pool water. Too little can damage pool surfaces; too much can cause scaling.

Why is my pool water cloudy or milky?

This is often due to poor filtration or inadequate chemical disinfection. Check and clean your filtration system and ensure chemical levels are correct.

How often should I test my pool water?

Test your pool water at least once a month to maintain proper chemical balance. It’s especially recommended to test before and after pool parties, storms, or other events that may affect water quality. Stop by one of our locations to have your pool water tested—we’re here to help you keep it clean and safe all season long!

What is a hair and leaf strainer and why should I check it?

This strainer protects the pool pump by catching debris like leaves, hair, and bobby pins. It’s located near the pump and should be checked daily.

Why is my pool water red or brown?

This is typically due to high iron content in your source water. For accurate results and the right solution, stop by NeJame & Sons to have your water professionally tested.

Why is the water blue-green, but it’s not algae?

High copper content can tint your pool water a blue-green color. Stop by Nejame & Sons to have your water tested and get the right treatment to restore clarity and balance.

What causes blue or black water?

This could indicate manganese in the water, especially if the water is corrosive. Test your water chemistry and adjust the balance to prevent damage. Stop by NeJame Pools to have your water tested and get expert advice on the right treatment.
